At MN Custom Homes, we see the importance of home office design in new construction homes, especially as many of us are working and learning from home like never before. The home office has quickly become one of the most coveted rooms in the house. The space that once was for bills, phone chargers, and files is now one of the most used areas in the home.
With more than one person in the home likely needing to utilize the home office (school study space as well!), we are seeing “home co-working spaces” evolve more than ever. With that, comes a shift in the way that we furnish our spaces.
All of the new construction homes we build include home office rooms with 9 ft+ ceilings and oversized windows that fill the space with light and make the room feel even larger than it already is. You might try decorating with matching desks, chairs, lamps, and accessories that create a functional and cohesive environment that fits in with the rest of the home’s décor. Instead of one big desk centered in the room with a couple of club chairs like a scene from Mad Men, many are opting for multiple desks of smaller scale to accommodate multiple family members at once.
Think about the cool coworking spaces that we used to work out of before hunkering down at home. They were so well-executed from a design and function standpoint. Consider ways to personalize your home office design and create this feeling in your home. For example:
- Add a bar cart with an espresso maker or single-serve beverage brewer
- Stock a basket with quick snacks to cut down on trips to the kitchen.
- Organize supplies on floating shelves to free up some ground and desktop space
- Add a scent/oil diffuser to create a sensory environment.
In all of our homes, the floorplans include an oversized bonus/TV room in addition to your designated bedrooms. For some, having a large bonus TV room is the best use of that space, but if you find that you are needing more workspaces in your office, try switching the two! Make a cozy bonus room where the home office was and make a larger workspace where the bonus room was! Both the office and bonus room have ample space, which makes them very adaptable to your needs and both are cable and ethernet ready.
We love offering homes with spaces that can evolve and be multipurpose as your household grows or needs change. We are happy to discuss the options for enhancing any space to make it more comfortable for your lifestyle and you can find examples of past home office and bonus room projects on our website.
